Suzanne plays old time music in keeping with her love of history and times gone by. Her performances and songs are based in traditional songs passed on across the oceans and through time. The result is a blend of old time roots, bluegrass and country tunes.

Although based in Melbourne, over the years Suzanne has taken this old time music offering to festivals, clubs, events, radio and gigs across Victoria Australia and more recently to playing in Northern America and Canada. Suzanne plays solo and in a range of line ups, including as the duo Savannah Rose.

Getting into Festivals - Short Video Series

Hi

Recently I was asked by the Alex Legg Memorial Foundation to speak to developing musicians about applying for music festivals. I have written about this before but now Ive made some video podcasts for you to watch and listen to rather than have to read the materials. Check out the first in the series which looks at why apply and play at music festivals - what are the benefits for musicians and what are the cons. The series is now uploaded to Suzanne Diprose Music Facebook. Keep a check out the first of these video podcast on my music page.

Check this series of 5 videos out. It will take you through:

  1. Session 1 - Why play music festivals and what do you need to consider
  2. Session 2 - How music festivals work and how it applies to us as musicians
  3. Session 3 - Getting prepared for music festival applications and what you will need
  4. Session 4 - Direct feedback on essentials from music festival organisers
  5. Session 5 - How to get booked at music festivals

Ill also be looking at writing a good biography in a later podcast...so keep checking back in.

If you want written information on these topics, send me an email to suzanne@performanceadvantage.com.au

Getting into Festivals

Im glad to be asked to talk about how to get into festivals and winning government grants at the Alex Legg Memorial Foundation at the SkyLark Lounge in Upwey Thursday 27th September. Details can be found on https://www.facebook.com/almfaustralia/ . There is a small cost for the presentation, music and discussions with other musicians.

Many musicians and artists think there are some sort voodoo or magic to get into festivals or win government funding, but its not about that at all. Its a matter of getting your collateral together, knowing the market and opportunities and making wise selections that target your kind of music or project.

To win government grants the best tips I can offer is to:

  1. Be vigilant about the grants on offer (keep a close eye on the websites)
  2. Understand the grant guidelines very well (this can help you gestate an idea and match it to the funding requirements)
  3. Speak to the Department before hand (create the relationship and understanding of what you offer)
  4. Be clear about your project in written form and financial costs (check it all before you submit)

In terms of applying for festivals much of the same information and resources you need to collect for funding grants can also be used for festivals. In a nutshell you are applying for a job (like anywhere else) and you need to:

  1. Grab attention of the festival organisers
  2. Answer exactly what has been asked of you
  3. Have live performance collateral ready
  4. Know your costs
  5. Have a biography written and ready

For more information please contact me or the Alex Legg Memorial Foundation.
